Reading module in TOEFL basically consists of three to five passages , approximately 700 words in length. The topics for passages may vary from academic ones to some sort of studies or researches. In order to fetch good marks in reading module, a proper understanding of the passage is required as the questions are generally asked details, main idea, inferences, sentence insertion , vocabulary, over all ideas etc. As the topics are ones generally discussed, therefore, any kind of prior knowledge about the same is not necessary. However, test takers should manage their time well by keeping an eye on the timer on computer screen.
Listening section tests an individual’s ability to understand English language when it is heard in different accents. This module consists of 6 passages where two are student discussions where as four are academic lectures of discussions. There would be five to six questions from the conversation as well as the lecture. The conversation or lecture will be heard only once by the test taker and questions are asked afterwards. Therefore, it is advisable to make notes while listening which can be used as a reference for answering questions.
The simplest of the four modules is speaking one which consists of six tasks: two independent and four integrated. For independent one, test takers are generally asked their opinion regarding a particular point of view. A preparation time of 15 seconds is given for this after which the test taker speaks for 45 seconds. The integrated tasks involve reading and listening also. For two integrated tasks, a reading text along with a conversation is given and a particular question which integrates information from both reading and listening task is answered. In the other two integrated tasks, only a conversation or lecture is played based upon which the test takers answers the question asked.
This module measures the test taker’s ability to write in a coherent way organising the ideas in a lucid form. The writing module consists of two tasks – one integrated and the other independent. The integrated one requires the individual read a passage and listen to a particular lecture and organise both the ideas in such a way as to answer the question asked further. The second one, i.e. independent task requires the test taker to put an opinion regarding any issue discussed. The time limit is displayed on the screen and the test takers must keep an eye on it.
